The written expression and interaction test of the DELE B2 lasts 80 minutes and consists of 2 tasks. You must write two texts of 150-180 words each. This test is part of Group 1 along with reading comprehension, so you need a good result here to compensate for possible failures in reading.

Task 1: Formal text based on an input

You will be given a stimulus (graphic, table, advertisement, email) and you must draft a formal text: letter, opinion article, or report.

Most common types of text

• Formal letter: complaint, request, proposal to an institution
• Opinion article: for a magazine or newspaper on a social issue
• Report: data analysis with conclusions and recommendations

Recommended structure

• Introduction (2-3 lines): present the topic and your purpose
• Development (2 paragraphs): arguments, data from the input, examples
• Conclusion (2-3 lines): summary, proposal, or final request

Useful connectors

To argue: "first of all", "on one hand... on the other", "furthermore", "likewise". To contrast: "however", "nevertheless", "despite that". To conclude: "ultimately", "based on everything stated", "in conclusion".

Task 2: Text to choose between two options

You can choose between two text options. The most common formats are:

• Letter to the editor of a newspaper
• Blog or forum post
• Review (book, movie, restaurant)
• Semi-formal email

Key advice

Choose the option you are most comfortable with. If you feel confident with formal letters, choose that. If you prefer a more informal tone (blog, review), go for the other. The important thing is to demonstrate lexical variety and grammatical accuracy.

Evaluation criteria

Evaluators assess:

• Relevance: Do you meet the task requirements? Is the register appropriate?
• Coherence and cohesion: Does the text have a logical structure? Do you use connectors?
• Grammatical accuracy: Agreement, verb tenses, prepositions
• Lexical range: Variety of vocabulary, idiomatic expressions

Errors to avoid

• Writing less than 150 or more than 200 words (penalizes)
• Mixing registers (you/formal you in the same text)
• Not using the input provided in Task 1
• Repeating the same words — use synonyms
• Forgetting the structure: greeting/sign-off in letters, title in articles

Practice plan

Write at least 2 texts per week timing yourself (40 minutes per text). Review your texts looking for recurring errors. If possible, ask a native speaker to correct them.
