DELE B1 vs B2: differences and which one to choose
One of the most common doubts among Spanish students is whether to take the DELE B1 or B2. Both are official diplomas from the Instituto Cervantes, but the leap between them is considerable. We analyze the key differences to help you decide.
General differences between B1 and B2
According to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR):
- B1 (Threshold): You can manage in most everyday situations, produce simple texts, and describe experiences and desires.
- B2 (Advanced): You can understand complex texts, interact fluently with natives, and produce clear and detailed texts on various topics.
In practice, B2 requires understanding nuances, irony, implicit opinions, and complex arguments that do not appear in B1.
Differences in exam structure
Reading comprehension
- B1: 70 minutes, 5 tasks. Simple informational and narrative texts.
- B2: 70 minutes, 4 tasks. Argumentative texts, opinion articles, and literary texts with greater lexical complexity.
Listening comprehension
- B1: 40 minutes, 5 tasks. Clear conversations and everyday messages.
- B2: 40 minutes, 5 tasks. Lectures, debates, news, and conversations with varied registers and natural speed.
Written expression
- B1: 60 minutes, 2 tasks. Basic descriptive and narrative texts.
- B2: 80 minutes, 2 tasks. Argumentative texts, formal letters, opinion articles with clear structure and advanced connectors.
Oral expression
- B1: 15 minutes + 15 preparation, 4 tasks.
- B2: 20 minutes + 20 preparation, 3 tasks. Argumentation, negotiation, and the ability to react to unforeseen events are expected.
The difficulty leap
The transition from B1 to B2 is one of the most demanding in language learning. Here are the main qualitative differences:
- Vocabulary: B2 requires mastering abstract vocabulary, idiomatic expressions, and collocations that do not appear in B1.
- Grammar: Subjunctive in all its forms, complex conditional sentences, advanced indirect style, and verbal periphrasis.
- Speed: B2 audios are played at natural speed, without artificial pauses.
- Ambiguity: In B2, correct answers are not always obvious; one must infer and deduce.
When to choose B1?
DELE B1 is the best option if:
- You have been studying Spanish for 1 to 2 years
- You need a certificate for Spanish nationality (the minimum is A2, but B1 is more useful)
- You want a first official certification as motivation
- You do not feel comfortable debating or arguing in Spanish
When to choose B2?
DELE B2 is more suitable if:
- You need the certificate to access a Spanish university
- You are looking for job opportunities where B2 level is required
- You can maintain fluent conversations with native speakers
- You read the news in Spanish without excessive difficulty
- You have been studying for more than 2-3 years or have lived in a Spanish-speaking country
Can you skip B1?
Yes, absolutely. It is not necessary to have DELE B1 to take B2. Each diploma is independent. If your actual level is between B1 and B2, we recommend taking a full practice exam for B2 and evaluating your score. If you get more than 50/100, with specific preparation you can reach the 60 needed to pass.
